A severe shock of an Earthquake
was felt in this and the neighbouring
towns, on the morning of the 26th
inst. about 3 o'clock. Its course ap-
pears to have been from east to west.
The buildings in this vicinity were
alarmingly agitated, the furniture on
the shelves deranged and rattled to-
gether, windows violently shaken in
their casements, attended with a crack-
ling of the glass. The beasts of the
field appear to have been alarmed by
this awful phenomenon; and the pa-
stures resounded with the lowings of
cattle--The rumbling noise and the
trembling of the earth, abated and
increased several times, in rapid and
regular succession, like the waves of
the Sea.--There appeared to be a real
lifting and rocking of the earth. Ve
ssels in the river and bay were sensibly
affected; some were said to have been
lifted considerably in the water, and
others to have been thrown nearly on
their beam ends. Fish were seen in
large numbers upon the top of the
water, exhibiting signs of alarm. In
College township, No. 2, the shock is
said to have been more severe than at
this place.
