STOCKBRIDGE, MASSA. SEPT. 4.

The Editors at the East ward seem surprised that our "social harmonious" President should have appointed Wm Lyman and Henry Warren to offices in ports far distant from their usual places of abode. As respects the former gentleman, we can inform them, that, for many years past, he has had no abiding place. His family have lived in Northampton, where they have been reduced to the necessity of earning a scanty subsistence by the labor of their hands, while he has been wandering about the world, like an "infuriate man," seeking his long lost fortune. -When our benignant Chief Magistrate began to restore "harmony to social intercourse," by closing the doors of "honor and confidence" upon Virtue, and bursting them open to Vice, this gentleman was in Europe. He left this country a good Democrat, and so did he return. Immediately after his arrival (without even first visiting his wife and children) he presented himself at the seat of government, to claim his reward, by sharing with his fellows, the loaves and fishes of office. But there seemed not then to be left the bone of a fish, or the crumb of a loaf to nibble at. He came at the "eleventh hour" and thought to receive his "hire," but the pennies were all disposed of, and not even a farthing left for him. Hungry, penniless and disappointed, he departed from the "vineyard of his lord," and was often heard to utter reproachful language of him whom he had once thought worthy of his highest praise and adoration. In his heart, and with his tongue, he cursed the man who could thus turn a deaf ear to his long tale of services, and put him off with, there is no office for you - vacancies happening by death are few, by resignation, none—the censures of more than half of the nation are already heaped upon me for the exercise of my exterminating power—I must endeavor to calm the storm I have raised on the tempestuous sea of liberty, or its tumultuous surges will overwhelm me -at present I can only offer you the homage of my high respects. Poor consolation indeed for one who had hurried home from Europe with high wrought expectations that "the doors of honor and confidence" would fly open to receive him. Despairing of success here, this then much injured man again pushed his boat for the European world, from whence it is said he has not yet returned. But the benevolence of a Jefferson is not bounded by the shores of the Atlantic; the doors are again opened, and Mr. Lyman is invited to enter and receive the reward justly due for his "revolutionary adherence to our enemies" in furnishing them with the beef of New England -while those, on whom the doors are closed were fighting the battles of their country.
