New York City (ILNS).—Norman Thomas, Socialist candidate for the Socialist Call, declared, in reference to the election of President Truman, that "it is much to the good that the people resented Mr. Dewey and his evasion of issues; that they repudiated the record of the 80th Congress and that in general, they showed a desire for liberal legislation. It is to the good that there will not be divided party responsibility but that the Democratic party will be held to account (Turn to Page Two)

for what happens or doesn't happen."
Thomas charged, however, that "vindication given to a man with so mediocre a record as President Truman" will "tend to restore the Democratic party as a thoroughly unhealthy alliance of southern bourbons and corrupt northern city machines with liberal and labor elements—which ought to have a party of their own."
While conceding that it is "probable—but not certain" that Congress will accede to Mr. Truman's demand for the repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act, Thomas asserted that "it is improbable that Congress or the Executives in the Democratic Party will develop the constructive wisdom necessary to deal adequately with the problems of peace, the growth of militarism, or the boom to bust cycle."

Norman Thomas declared that the election of President Truman was positive for resenting Dewey's evasion, repudiating the 80th Congress, and desiring liberal legislation, ensuring Democratic accountability. He charged that it vindicates Truman's mediocre record, restoring an unhealthy Democratic alliance of southern bourbons, corrupt northern machines, and liberals/labor who need their own party. He conceded probable but uncertain repeal of Taft-Hartley Act, but doubted Democratic wisdom on peace, militarism, and economic cycles.
