Song:
The lads—I wonder how they
I'm sure I never tell,
And oft I vow I do not confess it—
How can they guess so well
For once 'twas so I told my lady
I would not love—yet I;
Nay, aye I was yes the saucy lady
He saw yes in my eye.
My mother says 'tis naughty—very:
For I am scarce sixteen:
Vowed, to please the dame so dear
My tongue should ne'er be mean.
And still 'twas no I told my lady,
And still—I wonder why
He kiss'd me—ah, the saucy lady
He saw love in my eye.
The little love I bade him take,
Asleep within my breast,
But when he heard my heart beat merry,
The rebel could not rest.
And while I thought the boy was sleeping—
Alack! he so sly!
I found two eyes at last a-peeping,
Aye, peeping through my eye.
