Full Text
A Prophecy Has Become History.—Thirty years ago, on the 22d of December, Daniel Webster delivered the Second Centennial oration at Plymouth, in which, with that wise forecast which has often distinguished him as a far seeing statesman, he said—"It may be safely asserted that there are now more than a million of people, descendants of New England ancestry, living free and happy in regions which, hardly sixty years ago, were tracts of unpenetrated forest. Nor do rivers, or mountains, or seas, resist the progress of industry or enterprise. Ere long, the sons of the Pilgrims will be on the shores of the Pacific." The sons of the Pilgrims are on the shores of the Pacific already. They are there with their brethren of other States, and there they have founded an American colony, created an American form of government, established an American State, and, under the stars and stripes of the Republic, they are represented in the American Union.
