THE MILLENNIUM.
The Present State of Affairs on Earth Limited to the Present Century. According to Rev. M. Baxter—The Bonaparte Dynasty, Twice Killed, to Rise Triumphant and With Terrible Power Ere the Prophecy Will be Fulfilled—The Beginning of the End in 1890.
New York, Feb. 20.—Rev. M. Baxter, who has been fixing the end of time for a week or two past, settled the question this afternoon. About the year 1900 the millennium will begin. He told all about it in Cosmopolitan Hall to about five hundred persons. Around the room were arranged illustrations of Daniel's visions and John's revelations, most of them of a cheerless character. Before the millennium comes there is to be a season of hard times for everybody on both sides of the world. The audience was not impressed, the collection being too small for a congregation expecting to have no use for money in a short while.
What Rev. Mr. Miller proved so conclusively many years ago, what a great many Second Adventists have from time to time fixed at later movable dates, Rev. Mr. Baxter figured as unanswerably today for 1900. He read from Daniel to prove that the present trouble in the East was his prophecy—all nations going to fight Jerusalem. The image seen by Nebuchadnezzar with head of gold and feet of clay was about demolished to the feet, and the toes were represented by the ten kingdoms of Cæsar's world—England, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal on the right foot; Greece, Egypt, Syria, Bulgaria and Asia Minor on the left. To fulfill all the prophecies two prominent things must happen—England must become a republic and France must whip Germany.
The speaker depicted the scenes of the latter times with the world adrift, and at this point called upon the congregation to sing "Pull for the shore." The men prophesying in the beginning of the millennium were as much ahead of their age as Galileo, Isaac Newton and Jenner. How astonished the children of the millennium would be, he said, that we were so blind in this matter. Having opened the six phials mentioned by John, the Revelator, Mr. Baxter opened the seventh. The former phials referred to things that had already happened: the seventh refers to things to come. Mr. Baxter said: "The anti-Christ, who will open things just previous to the opening of the millennium, is Plon-Plon Bonaparte, and the French people will own about all Europe. New York and the Western Hemisphere cuts no figure in the conquest of the Bonaparte dynasty, which is the seven-headed animal mentioned in Daniel as having received a deadly wound from which it recovered. The dynasty was twice killed—once at Waterloo—once at Sedan. This double death makes assurance doubly sure. Daniel said the wound would be healed. This means that in the coming conflict with Germany France will win. We are now between the wounding and healing. The beginning of the end will come in 1890. Then for seven years Prince Bonaparte will reign supreme and many millions will be put to death in those terrible times. This is the battle of Armageddon. All the Anarchists, Socialists and dynamiters will join and fight the saints.
Bad as the state of things will be under Bonaparte's reign they will be worse in the succeeding three years and a half. Still, real estate owners are making their wills, deeding their possessions to their children's children as if the world were going on forever. In thirteen years the vexed land question will settle itself—no body will own a cent's worth. We are on the verge of the war with God Almighty and evil spirits are now at work getting the forces together. The dragon, the scarlet woman and the beast with seven horns are busily engaged in raising troops. Spiritualistic mediums will be told by Satan that Napoleon is the ancient of days and all the spiritualists will join his forces. The spirit of Communism which is represented by the Socialists in Germany, the Nihilists in Russia, the Fenians in Ireland, is one of the elements of the coming struggle.
There will be great earthquakes between the present day and the end of all the trouble, but the greatest will be the final one, when all these lofty flats, hotels and business structures will be flattened to the ground. The Charleston earthquake is not the only one of its kind: there are others coming both there and in places heretofore exempt.
The end of the century is the end of the world—in its present condition. Then will come the millennium. The chosen ones during that thousand years will sleep in heaven at night and come down to the earth to do their work. Then, by spreading their wings, they will fly to the sun. There will be people on earth who can not fly. But, traveling on railroad trains, they will look out of the windows and see the lion and the child together; the bear and the cow, the wolf and the lamb. At the beginning of the millennium Christ will come as a thief in the night and get the 144,000 Christians. He will be like the rich men who now have country houses—working on earth and living in Heaven.
