The last advices, by the way of Heligoland, of the operations of the Russian armies, announcing the capture of Konigsberg and Memei, to which we alluded yesterday, are given at length in this morning's paper. They come down to the 14th of January.
Konigsberg, the capital of Prussia, stands on the river Pregel, which falls at this point into the Frische Haf. an inlet of the Baltic. It is between six and seven miles in circumference, and contains about sixty thousand inhabitants. It will be recollected, that this is one of the comfortable posts at which Bonaparte intended to establish his winter quarters.
Memel is a strongly fortified town of Eastern Prussia, situated on the north extremity of the Curische Haf. an inlet of the Baltic : 76 miles N. N. East of Konigsberg and 140 miles N. East of Dantzic. It is a place of extensive commerce, and affords the best harbor in the Baltic.
Dantzic, which the Russians are also said to have possession of, is too well known to require any description
Kowno, where the French lost 21 cannon and 6000 prisoners, is a small town of Lithuania, situated on the rivers Wil. pa & Niemen. 40 miles west of Wilna
The Russians entered Wilna on the 10th, and would therefore probably have remached Kowno at the time the battle is said to have been fought, to wit, on the 15th.
Tilsit, towards which Wittgenstein and Platoff were proceeding after the battle of Kowno, is situated on the Vegna river, and is 50 miles N. East of Konigsberg.
Grodno. for which Tormasov was moving, is a considerable town of Lithu- ania, in Poland, standing on the river Niemen 125 miles N. E. of Warsaw.
The Russians have now the complete command of the Baltic.
