NEW CANDIDATES.

In our announcement column to-day will be found several new names—among which are, Captain Harper Peterson, for Presiding Justice; Robert R. Hinzman for Assessor of the First District; D. T. Peterson for County Surveyor, and Judge Thomas A. Edwards for Presiding Justice.

Captain Peterson is well known throughout the county as one of our most worthy and intelligent citizens. He is not a lawyer—(we put that down as something in his favor)—but a farmer, and a large tax-payer. In public business in which he has heretofore been engaged, he has given such general satisfaction that a large number of friends, in both parties, have prevailed upon him to become a candidate. If elected, he will make a faithful, efficient and most excellent officer.

Robert R. Hinzman, who is a candidate for Assessor in the First District, is one of our most substantial farmers. He is known as an honest, upright and intelligent citizen, and as one who contributes largely to the support of the government, in the matter of taxation. He is perfectly well qualified for the position to which he aspires; and, should the people make him their Assessor, they may depend upon his work being done promptly, fairly and correctly.

Lieutenant D. T. Peterson, the candidate for County Surveyor, will, we presume, have no opposition. His administration of the duties of the office for which he is a candidate, during the past four years, have been so eminently satisfactory to all concerned, that there seems to be a general desire for his re-election. A good county surveyor, such as Mr. Peterson has proven himself to be, is very desirable; and he may point with pride to his past services, as the best index of how he will conduct himself if re-elected.

Judge Thomas A. Edwards is brought out as a candidate for re-election to the office he now holds—that of Presiding Justice. We have this to say in relation to Mr. Edwards, that while we oppose him politically, no better man for this position could be found in the county. So far as we are informed he has performed his duties promptly, faithfully and well. We know him to be honest and capable; and if re-elected, we know also that he will continue to perform the duties of his office faithfully and impartially, and without fear, favor or affection.

Just as we go to press, we have been authorized to announce 'Squire O. H. P. Washburne, of this place, as a candidate for Presiding Justice. Probably no man in the county is better known than the 'Squire. He is a hard-working, honest laboring man. He possesses that degree of intelligence which eminently fits him for the office to which he aspires; and his long experience as a Justice, both in this county and in Wirt, has given him that knowledge of proceedings in Court, so essential to a judicial officer. If elected, we pledge our word he will perform his duties to the full satisfaction of all concerned.
