The Seward and Weed men have commenced the fight in earnest against Greeley, Chase & Company. The Auburn Advertiser thus refers to James Harlan, Secretary of the Interior:
"Secretary Harlan is a Methodist preacher of the Western style - radical, zealous, and importunate. We suspect that he is a better preacher than statesman. He has negro on the brain severely. Several years ago he stumped Iowa for the Republican party, and succeeded in getting into the United States Senate. Whilst there he undertook to supervise President Lincoln and upon one occasion got up a caucus of Senators to request the removal of Secretary Seward. The President did not need his advice at that time. It came to pass, however, that Harlan was appointed Secretary of the Interior, and he is now in Johnson's Cabinet. He is in sympathy with Chase, and expects to make him President. He is understood to be opposed to President Johnson's plan for restoration - starting upon the untenable idea that the Union has been dissolved, he follows it out in all its ramifications. He opposed the appointment of Preston King to the office of Collector of New York because the latter is understood to be in sympathy with Secretary Seward. We conclude from what we have observed of his course, that he is a very restless as well as ambitious man."
There is no mistaking the sound of this crack of the Seward whip. - Albany Argus.
