Full Text

At Rome, as our private letters import, all things are preparing for the election of another successor to St. Peter. A procession of Cardinals to the conclave paraded from the Church of the Vatican on the 5th of last month, in the evening of which day their Eminences entered the sacred building. On a scrutiny it appeared that Cardinal Bosch had seventeen voices; but the Spanish ambassador is said to have entered a formal PROTEST against any election until the arrival of the Spanish Cardinals. Thus, this mockery of holiness, this farce of election is retarded or accelerated, as the temporal power and interests of the Catholick Princes shall decide; and thus a Pontiff, who is supposed to be chosen, as was MATTHIAS in the place of ISCARIOT by DIVINE LOT, is in fact, elevated to the Papal Divinity by the influence of POLITICAL INTRIGUE.
