To LuCRETIA:
I Have read with Attention your Essay upon Matrimony, and like the Characters you have drawn, but know not where to find such a Man---- I believe in this degenerate Age, such Men are very thinly sown in the Field of human Nature. My Situation in Life has been conspicuous, advantageous for Observation, and I have been a critical Observer of human Conduct, but have seen few, very few Gentlemen whose Minds were ornamented with those shining Qualities which are requisite to qualify them to be the Head of the Woman, and to exercise those Prerogatives which they generally claim --- If it would be no Transgression of the Laws of Politeness, nor wound the delicate Ear, I should add, That the revolving Sun has gone several Annual Rounds since I have been a probationer for the highest Sphere and brightest Scene of bliss in human Life--e.. for a Companion---- yet I have never found one to my Taste--.- You will not suppose that I have been destitute of Admirers---- My Family is honourable, my Fortune genteel, my Person and Accomplishments - -f ---- but here Modesty forbids me to proceed, although Truth marks my Steps and leads the Way- - -- A single Life is a misfortune; a bad Companion is worse - - - - My Situation is disagreeable, but not singular; Multitudes move in the same unpleasing Circle. Pray Lucretia give us your advice.
