The fly-by-night, rump group, UROC, is also a slip-in-the-back-door artist.
While attempting to belittle the wage settlement won by the BRT, effective Dec. 16, 1953, in its ballyhoo sheet, UROC FACTS, the struggling rump outfit has had its hands out all the time in hopes of getting the same agreement from Chicago River & Indiana Railroad (Chicago Junction Railway) where it represents the firemen. By the way, this is the only railroad east of the Rocky Mountains where UROC holds a contract.
Well, UROC slipped in the back door recently and asked management of Chicago River & Indiana Railroad to give the men it represents the same settlement won by the BRT Dec. 16, 1953 and later by the BLF&E on Jan. 9. 1954. Management said "yes" and the agreement was signed Jan. 25. 1954.
The UROC outfit is shown in its true light. It condemned the BRT pact, containing a five-cent increase, adding 13 cents in cost-of-living adjustments to firm base rates and providing three weeks vacation after 15 or more years service, but it was happy to have these gains handed to UROC without the need to spend a penny in negotiation expense.
In a pact Jan. 12. 1954 with Pennsylvania Railroad, United Railroad Workers (CIO) accepted the same agreement which the BRT won Dec. 16, effective Dec. 16. 1953.
The UROC stepped up Feb. 5 and took the same settlement on U. S. railroads.
