IDEOLOGICAL WARFARE
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich.
In the West we have invested in
everything but a moral ideology,"
said Garrett R. Searly of Montclair, N. J. at a session here of
the Summit Conference for the
Moral Re-Armament of the World.
The West is spending billions
for everything else, but the na-
tions are not getting what they
need," he said.
Mr. Searly reported that the in-
vestment of $100,000 to bring 100
leading Japanese youth for train-
ing in MRA at Mackinac last year
"has resulted in the defeat of Com-
munist strategy to take over the
leading youth organization of Ja-
pan in their election last month.
"It has focused for all Asia a
policy of "not left, not right, but
straight," he said.
SUMMER NEEDS
Mr. Searly said that $3,000,000
is needed this summer "to do
ideologically what needs to be
done - to enable the leadership
from Southeast Asia and Africa to
meet here for training in the stra-
tegy of a moral ideology.
Mr. Searly explained that con-
tributions came from workers, in-
dustrialists and people of every
walk of life. He cited a national
labor leader who contributed one-
third of his weekly salary and a
worker in the newly-completed
buildings who gave his bonus
check. Others gave sacrificially of
wages, savings and life insurance
policies.
Dr. Renato Loffredo of New
York, American Bureau chief of
the Italian News Agency, said that
the uncommitment of Asia and
Africa was based on hatred and
fear of being dominated.
IDEOLOGY OF HEART
"What we need is a moral ide-
ology-not a political ideology
that will deal with the misery of
poverty and the misery of riches,"
he said. "The West should export
an ideology that goes to the heart."
Former Prime Minister of China
General Ho Ying-Chin arrived
with the initial delegation from
Free China on June 1.
The more than 700 delegates
present gave a standing ovation
to Chief Walking Buffalo and a
group of Stoney Indians from Al-
berta who accompanied him. In
1935 the Chief had made Frank
Buchman a blood-brother of the
tribe in recognition of the work
of MRA. He was given the name
of Awa-wa Zan Zan Tonga, Chief
Big Light in Darkness.
It was to Mackinac Island that
the Indian tribes of this Michigan
area used to come to settle their
feuds. They believed that one day
the Great Spirit Manitou would
pitch His teepee on the island and
gather the warring nations to-
gether to establish unity.
