"Having on the 10th instant received intelligence from a ship spoken with by the Ramillies, of 20 sail of French merchant ships, under convoy of three frigates, homeward bound from Martinique, I hauled close upon a wind that night, in hopes of meeting with them; and the next morning we discovered a sail from our mast-head, far to windward; being little wind all day, we did not get near them till even in the evening, when the Ramilles fired at and brought three of them to; the frigates then left them, and they separated. I got up with two in the night, which I boarded, and in the morning gave chase to two more, which we took. The Ramilles was then at some distance in chase of others, some of which she must have come up with; but as I have not seen her since, cannot say what number. The remaining part of the convoy were so much dispersed, that they must fall a prey to our privateers."
