Excellent progress was noted in the annual membership drive of the local branch of the NAACP at the second report meeting of the 1934 campaign Saturday evening at the Butler Street YMCA, according to all indications.
The division which is being led by E. M. Martin, prominent Atlanta Life Insurance company official is slightly in the lead, early reports indicate but Mrs. Josephine Dibble Murphy and her coworkers swear that they will be in the lead at the next report meeting Monday night and at the meetings from then on until the close of the drive next Sunday at the big mass meeting at the Wheat St. Baptist church.
Today, all churches of the city will hear of the aims and purposes of the NAACP through their pastors, the ministers having been asked to tell the members of their congregations of the needs and accomplishments of the national organization for the benefit of colored people in general.
Campaign headquarters are being maintained at the Butler St. YMCA with the Rev. J. Raymond Henderson acting as general chairman of the drive. Mrs. Reed is the Secretary in charge of the office and a special telephone, Walnut 6905 has been installed to facilitate the work of the membership effort.
According to Attorney A. T. Walden, president of the Atlanta branch, the membership campaign has a very bright outlook. This is the first time in a number of years that the campaign has been conducted without the aid of an outside person of considerable repute and the progress being made despite the innovation is leading all of the workers and NAACP officials to be even more jubilant over their success to date.
More than 60 workers are now on the field busily engaged in obtaining the annual memberships of those interested in this pioneer organization for the fighting for the rights of Negroes.
