Full Text

The News, of the 6th, finds space enough to put in a general disclaimer against the many and strongly urged doubts, that have been expressed both by the Legislature and press, of its Democracy. It has nailed the Jeffersonian banner to its mast-head, and proposes to run her on that line. Notwithstanding it is scarcely two weeks since it proclaimed its utter and perfect freedom from all party ties, and its independence and impersonal disregard of all party lines, the News affects to disregard the voice of the press, and the people of Texas, but every now and then these same powers are potent enough to cause the News - an excellent paper in many respects, and only weak in its Democracy - to back and fill like an oyster smack in a cross sea. Every now and then it gives evidence of its own internal allegiance to Jeffersonian Democracy, but then, alas! the tide turns, and the noble old vessel is chopping about in the slough of political doubt, in the wake of its great prototype, the New York Herald, without a rudder and without colors. We for one will rejoice when it hauls up sharp on the true Democratic course, when the people of Texas, the Democracy, will learn to look for it, in consequence of its sound politics, with the same eagerness that they now do, for its vast volume of the latest and freshest news, and this will all occur when its ideas of money are divorced from its ideas of principle.
