Dec. 7. The Baronetage lately devolved to the Honourable Mr. Temple, his Majesty's Envoy to the American States, is the same title that was enjoyed by the celebrated Sir William Temple, Ambassador Extraordinary at the Hague. Sir William, dying in 1699, without male issue, the Baronetage went to Field Marshall Sir Richard Temple of Stowe, who, for his conduct and bravery in taking Vigo, was soon after created Lord Viscount Cobham of Great Britain; and upon his Lordship's death, in 1749, the title of Viscount went, agreeable to its patent, to his sister's son, the late Lord Temple, and is now enjoyed, together with the Earldom of Temple and Barony of Buckingham, by George Marquis of Buckingham, Knight of the most honourable order of the Garter, who hath issue one son, (now Earl Temple) born in March 1776. The original Baronetage of the family went, upon the death of Lord Cobham, in 1749, to Sir Richard Temple, Commissioner of the Navy, the nearest in the male line, who died at Bath on the 15th ult. without issue. This title was granted in 1612, to Sir Peter Temple of Buckinghamshire, and is one of the most ancient of those hereditary honours. The magnificent seat and beautiful gardens of Stowe, renowned for being perhaps the most elegant in Europe, were brought progressively to their present high-finish and taste by their respective owners, from Sir Peter Temple, the first Baronet, to their present noble possessor, the Marquis of Buckingham, who enjoys about 17,000l. a year in the said county of Bucks, (of which he is Lord Lieutenant) and near as much more in Dorset, Somerset, and other counties of England, besides upwards of 10,000l. a year, with the Earldom of Nugent, and Viscounty and Barony of Clare in Ireland, which must devolve upon the Marchioness his Lady, or to her descendants, upon the demise of Lord Nugent, her Ladyship's father. It almost unnecessary to say, that in addition to these numerous titles and immense fortune, the Marquis of Buckingham, tho' not yet thirty-four, is (with the most complete education) reputed to be the best informed, and perhaps the most accomplished statesman in these Kingdoms. When Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, his administration in that Kingdom stands unequalled for having given satisfaction to, and gaining the confidence of that generous people. His Lordship and Mr. Pitt are brother and sister's children. Mr. Pitt was born on the 28th of May, 1759. The gardens of Stowe, occupy more than 370 acres.
