The Federal Trade Commission, with Judge John W. Bennett of Washington, D. C., presiding, met Saturday at the Federal building in this city to hold a hearing in a series of investigations into the activities of the U. S. Oil Company, Incorporated.
Some ten witnesses appeared before the commission at the session here, but the exact nature of the testimony presented was not made known by the members, and the findings of course will not be made public until the commission has made its report in the matter.
Judge Bennett was assisted at the hearing by George F. Wallace of Washington, D. C., examiner for the Federal Trade Commission and W. A. Monhegan also of the commission.
The corporation was represented by Edward A. Harriman of Washington.
It was understood that the investigation was into alleged acts of unfair competition and violations of the Sherman anti-trust law by the U. S. Oil Company.
The jurisdiction of the commission extends to all corporations other than banks and railroads in the country and their activity is a phase of the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Judge Bennett said Saturday that the Federal Trade Commission has conducted some 150 cases in all parts of the United States.
The members were in Bangor Friday, where they conducted a hearing.
The officers of the defendant corporation are W. J. Rooks, president; G. W. Rooks, vice president; J. P. Fox, vice president and director; C. T. Wass, secretary-treasurer; I. W. Sundberg, R. D. Brooks and J. F. Quinn, directors.
