Full Text

The matter of the occurrence at the caucus on Wednesday night was disposed of Friday night by the adoption of the resolutions concerning Mr. Atwater and the whole matter might have ended there. Mr. Atwater's statement was entirely dignified and proper and so were the resolutions adopted by the caucus. The matter might have ended there with satisfaction to all parties concerned. But the editor of the Chronicle chose to comment upon the occurrence in which he had no concern and by misrepresentation tried to make it appear that the City Editor of the News and Observer persisted in remaining after he was given to understand that he was not welcome there.

With regard to that the City Editor of this paper has the following to say:

In a local item in the News and Observer Saturday was the following:

"The representative of the News and Observer and the gentleman with him had no idea they were referred to, but supposed Mr. Atwater's remark was intended for some member of the caucus."

The following is an extract from Mr. Daniels' editorial of Saturday:

"The wrong committed by the News and Observer gentleman was in remaining after being kindly and courteously invited to retire without criticism. When he declined to do this, there was no other course open to the caucus than to plainly ask him to retire or to rescind its rule to exclude all except advocates of the bill."

When Mr. Daniels wrote that "the News and Observer gentleman" "declined to retire", he knew that he was writing what was a falsehood. He was not content to tell the truth about the matter, but resorted to falsehood to effect a purpose.
