Recent Elections.

The result of the recent elections in various States, cities and towns but adds confirmation to the facts developed by the press and public meetings, that the tide of public opinion in every Northern State is setting unmistakably against the present national administration. The death knell of Lecompton democracy is sounding throughout the country. Its doom is certain; its fate is sealed. Instead of the 'mourners going about the streets, the streets will be searched in vain for mourners.

The result in New Hampshire was a glorious triumph, but its lustre is dimmed by that of Connecticut. On Monday last the annual election for State officers and legislature took place in the land of steady habits—in the State misrepresented by half of its delegation in the House of Representatives at Washington. The result is a glorious Republican victory. Notwithstanding an anti-Lecompton candidate was nominated by the democrats on a Lecompton platform the Republicans have elected their governor by three thousand majority—being a net gain of that number of votes over last year—sixteen out of the twenty-one Senators, and two thirds of the House of Representatives. A pregnant fact connected with the election is that Bridgeport, the residence of Bishop one the Lecompton representatives in Congress, has given a Republican majority of 147, which is 128 more votes than Bishop's whole majority in his District last year

The Rhode Island election took place on Wednesday. The candidates of the Republicans were the same as last year. Gov. Dyer was re-elected by a large majority, and both branches of the legislature will be nearly unanimously of like faith. Thus the doughface Senator Allen, is rebuked. This legislature is to elect his successor and it is now settled that no more men of that stamp can go to the Senate from New England.

Four important cities of the West—Cincinnati the largest inland city in the United States; Dubuque, the chief city in Iowa; St. Louis, the most flourishing city in any slave-holding State away from the sea-board; and Jefferson City, the capital of Missouri, held their municipal elections on Monday, and in all the anti-Lecompton ticket, and in all but Cincinnati the Republican ticket prevailed. Cincinnati has gone anti-Lecompton by 3000 majority; Dubuque, usually two to one democratic, has gone 500 majority for the opposition. The interpretation put upon the Cincinnati Platform by the people of the city where said instrument was fabricated, is especially commended to the administration democracy.

The Michigan town elections show that the Republican party in that State are on the increase.

"The work goes bravely on."
