Mr. Stoddard,
I am daily importuned by the inquisitive to give my opinion concerning the late dispute in Massachusetts, and, as their solicitations are rather troublesome, I would wish to prevent them for the future, by publishing my sentiments in your Gazette.
Your giving them a place will oblige your constant reader.
JANUS.
| I hold for truth and faith | - | What Shays's plan allows, |
| What Lincoln's party faith | - | My confidence disavows, |
| I solemnly declare | - | And I will never yield |
| And 'tis my daily prayer | - | That Shays shall win the field, |
| That Lincoln may succeed | - | I never will consent |
| I firmly am agreed | - | With Shays to be content, |
| To fight on Lincoln's side | - | I ever shall disdain |
| It is my chiefest pride | - | The mob to entertain. |
| I give my hand and heart | - | To aid the troops of Shays |
| To fight on Lincoln's part | - | My confidence doth amaze, |
| The regulating crew | - | I think they're in the right |
| I hope they are but few | - | Who would against them fight, |
| Should any dare pretend | - | I'm not a friend to Shays |
| I am not Lincoln's friend | - | I will avow always, |
| He is a scoundrel base | - | Who would with Lincoln join |
| Who feels the court's disgrace | - | He is a friend of mine. |
