flew was unknown to most of them and that the reconnaissance operations were for the purpose of gradually building up uniformity of control so that before the second week of the maneuvers is closed, the elements of three planes each can function as group units.
During the third week of the maneuvers all groups are to operate together in a major war problem against the "red" or enemy army, theoretically in possession of southern California, holding a line across the state from Monterey bay through Stockton.
Visibility today on some of the routes was poor, giving pilots and observers vision ranging only from six to nine miles. Haze obscured the planes from view of spectators at Mather field shortly after the ships departed.
Others Expected
Ships of the second pursuit squadron, Selfridge field, Mount Clemens, Mich., were expected to arrive at Mather field some time tomorrow. The 22 planes of this group left Cheyenne, Wyo., this morning after being delayed several hours by adverse weather.
Army air corps officials here understood the group would stop at Salt Lake City tonight, refuel at Reno, then come here.
Two large aerial reviews are to be held here during the latter part of this week. The first is to be held Thursday, with Brig. Gen. William E. Gilmore commanding the provisional wing in the reviewing stand. The second review will be held on Saturday for Gov. C. C. Young, other state officials and guests.
