Accompanied by Governor Townsend, They Reached Convention City Yesterday.
Chicago, Ill., June 7. -- The Delaware delegation to the Republican National Convention has arrived in Chicago. It reached here at 9 o'clock yesterday morning and was accompanied by Governor John G. Townsend, Jr., of that State. He was the fourth governor to arrive, the other three being William G. Sproul of Pennsylvania, Samuel R. McKelvie of Nebraska and Thomas E. Campbell of Arizona.
Upon reaching Chicago the Delaware delegates went to the Hotel Sisson, their headquarters. First off, they held a caucus and decided on the re-election of T. Coleman du Pont, one of their number, as National Committeeman from Delaware. Senator L. H. Ball was elected chairman of the delegation. Former Governor S. S. Pennewill was chosen Delaware's representative of the convention committee on credentials. Other committee appointments were: Permanent organization, J. R. Benson; rules and order of business, Robert Elliott; resolutions, Senator Ball; notification of nominee for President, James A. Hurons; notification of nominee for Vice President, General du Pont.
Charles Warner, chairman of the State Republican committee, and Charles H. Grantland, secretary, accompanied the delegation. Last night the delegates were guests of Governor Townsend at a dinner in the hotel.
BOOM FOR T. C. DU PONT
A lively boom is in progress for General du Pont. Judge Daniel O. Hastings, who will make the nomination speech for the General, declared du Pont will gather strength from several States.
"We are confident General du Pont has a splendid chance in view of the situation," said Judge Hastings. "We know of some du Pont supporters in the Pennsylvania delegation and we are assured of support from Kentucky, General du Pont's birthplace."
General Morrow, of Kentucky, will probably second General du Pont's nomination.
Governor Townsend, shortly after his arrival, met Governors Campbell, of Arizona, and McKelvy of Nebraska. The three called on Governor Sproul of Pennsylvania.
Governor Townsend said he was surprised by the large sentiment and the confident predictions of the Pennsylvania delegation that Sproul would emerge from the convention with the nomination.
He declared while the Delaware delegates will be for General du Pont, he felt some of the delegation would support Sproul if the latter had a chance of winning and Gen. du Pont should not.
