Commercial business at Lima was dull.
Gen. Castillejo, who had been expected to march upon Lima, and to declare himself President, had not yet made his appearance. It was reported that he was at the head of a pretty formidable army.
The letter above quoted gives the following items of naval intelligence.
18th March, arrived, U.S. schr. Shark, from a cruise--all well.
The French frigate Niobe Blanche, arrived here 28th Feb., sailed on a cruise 24th March.
The frigate United States, Capt. Armstrong, sailed for Mazatlan 24th Feb. to return here and then home.
H.B.M. frigate Talbot, arrived here 3d of March, and still continues here.
Store ship Erie sailed for Valparaiso 14th March, and expected here soon.
H.B.M. steam frigate Salamander left here for Valparaiso, 17th March.
Our ship is in fine order, and is a proud specimen of American architecture. Everything goes on with ease and pleasure, and above all exceedingly temperate. Our flag takes the precedence here of all others. We have had a visit from the Vice President of Peru, yards were manned, and a national salute fired; also a visit from the Governor of Callao.
