More than square mile of city in ruins; property loss is $4,000,000

RELIEF CALL GOES OUT
FOR THE SUFFERERS

By The United Press,
AUGUSTA, Ga., March 23.-Augusta was prostrate today under the most disastrous conflagration in its history. One and one-quarter square miles of the business district and a large area of the finer residential section was a charred and smoking mass of ruins.

The fire was under control at noon.

At least one and possibly more lives have been lost. The damage wrought is still speculative. Estimates run anywhere from $4,000,000 to $6,000,000.

Three thousand of Augustans are homeless. Churches, schools and temporary shelters are housing them. Fire companies rushed here by special train from Atlanta, Macon and Savannah last night were still on duty when morning broke. Hospitals were crowded with injured. Merchandise from stores and household goods piled in the streets, were located by local militia.

The worst devastation wrought by the flames, which broke out late yesterday afternoon in the big Dyer office building, was in the very heart of the business district. Among the principal buildings destroyed were the Western Union, Dyer, Postal Telegraph, Commercial Club and Masonic Temple. Several banks were also destroyed, but most of their contents are believed to have been saved.

Ruins were searched today for victims of the fire. Dozens of persons were injured by falling walls and flying debris.

A high wind swept the flames up Broad street, the principal business thoroughfare. Reports that several persons had perished in office buildings were not confirmed at an early hour today.

A general call for relief funds was out today. Thousands of dollars already had been voluntarily subscribed.
