MEMPHIS, Tenn.-(SNS)- Dr. J. E. Walker's record and executive ability qualify him for the leadership in the organization of the proposed new bank in Memphis. He has reached the ripened age when men are sober and sane in their judgment. This, plus his wealth, business acumen, and his keen sense of honesty and efficiency, further coupled with his forty years of success and thrift, should arrest the attention and gain the support of all in this further venture in the business of banking.
Let us take a look at his record. He graduated from Alcorn College, Mississippi, and Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee. After fourteen years of successful practice of medicine, he unselfishly went into business to provide opportunities for Negro youth. Thousands have been inspired and helped to go forward. He was organizer and president of the Delta Penny Savings Bank, Indianola, Mississippi, for ten years and for six years president of the Mississippi Life Insurance Company. In 1923, he came to Memphis and organized the Universal Life Insurance Company with a capital stock of a hundred thousand dollars. In less than twenty years, he was president of a four million dollar institution.
All of Dr. Walker's time is not given to business. He is altruistic, civic and religious in precept and practice. He took the initiative in the organization of the Mississippi Blvd. Christian Church, the Negro Chamber of Commerce and the Memphis Urban League. For two years, he was chairman of the National War Bond Savings Clubs and received a citation from Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Secretary of the Treasury, for excellent performance of duty. He is a member of the Central Housing Committee and Treasurer of the National Christian Missionary Convention; he is trustee of the LeMoyne College, and has served the following national organizations: The National Negro Business League and the National Negro Insurance Association, six and two terms, respectively.
Dr. Walker has made an enviable record for himself, race and nation. Ripened with experience, sobriety, hard work and wisdom, he is capable of building another million dollar institution, the proposed new bank, for which a hundred thousand dollars have been subscribed already. As a result of his record, we share the advance knowledge of the organization of a bank owned and operated by Negroes in the city of Memphis. The man who leads out in this field of banking is not known to quit or fail. His success in establishing this proposed bank will be the keynote and crowning point of his many achievements and a contribution to this city, race and nation. We bid him God speed in this endeavor.
DR. JOSEPH E. WALKER SOUND BUSINESS JUDGMENT BEHIND PROPOSED BANK - With one hundred thousand dollars already subscribed for the new bank proposed for Memphis, business and professional leaders of Memphis and the tri-states who have taken the initiative in the movement have expressed, and reaffirmed their faith in the people who comprise this great market in the Delta of the Mississippi Valley.
They have likewise given practical evidence of their explicit confidence in the man who is heading up the organization for a new finance house. Dr. Joseph E. Walker, founder-president of Universal Life Insurance Company, and a past president of the National Negro Business League.
Dr. Walker has issued a call for everyone interested in the formation of a bank here in Memphis to meet this Friday, April 12, in the Directors' Room, Universal Life, 234 Hernando street at four o'clock.
