COLORED FOLKS HEAR CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR

David S. Ingalls Speaker at Emancipation Celebration, At Beechwood Park, on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Emancipation celebration at Beechwood park David S. Ingalls, candidate for Governor, said:

"Ohio is passing through a critical stage of government extravagance. Remember, I am strongly against any additional taxes for state purposes. I stand on that one thing above all. We need fewer orators and promises in public life and more actual work."

Ingalls paid a tribute to the colored race, mentioning their greatest friend, Abraham Lincoln, which brought great applause. The speaker was introduced by Congressman Thomas A. Jenkins, who told of his grandfather, David Sinton, being one of the early settlers at Hanging Rock and termed Mr. Ingalls as one of Lawrence County's own.

Mr. Ingalls, who arrived in the city via airplane, was delayed and did not arrive in time to ride in the parade, in which the high school band and American Legion Drum Corps took part. He was met at the Chesapeake airport by Homer M. Edwards, chairman of the Republican Executive Committee; Auditor Pearl A. Pratt and Judge Dan C. Jones, and escorted to the city by Motor Officer Bernard Monte.

Many other speakers were on the program including City Manager Howell. Among those who occupied the speakers platform were Sheriff Ernest Bennett, Representative David Crowe, Attorney John Porter, Judge Dan C. Jones, Attorney H. M. Edwards, County Clerk Homer Hayes, Senator John Loyd of Portsmouth, Gomer Jones of Gallia county, Mrs. Elizabeth Webb and Mrs. W. T. Moore of the county Republican Women's organization and members of the colored ministers union.

The meeting opened with a selection by the Ironton High school orchestra and Rev W. H. Hill then issued a call for leaders of both Republican faction, Democrats or Socialists to take places with the guest of honor. Rev. A. G. Freeman, president of the colored ministerial group, served as master of ceremonies and all stood while the Star Spangled-Banner was played Dr O. P. Wright led in prayer and the audience sang America.

Altho rain early in the afternoon kept many away, the crowd was a fair representation of the colored population of Ironton.
