Reign of Politicians.
It is a sad truth that our country is almost entirely ruled by the politicians; and more especially is this the case in California. It has been so from the beginning, and the end is not yet.
In the higher offices, it is necessary that the incumbents should be men well versed in the science of government, and thoroughly posted in the political history of the country, as well as in all questions affecting the present or future welfare of the state or nation. Aspirants for these positions should be prepared to fill them with honor to themselves and profit to the people, if, perchance, they should be called upon to take the responsibilities incident to such stations.
It is also the duty of every citizen— more especially in a free republic—that he should be thoroughly acquainted with the institutions of his country, its political, moral and social history, past and present. We assert that it is his duty to do this; and if he neglects or refuses to make himself thus acquainted with all the elements of the government under which he lives, he is indifferent to his own rights, and is not a free man.— Tuolumne Courier.
