TO THE PUBLIC.

After the testimony from the Printer, respecting the pieces, which by a writer in Tuesday's paper have been made a foundation for the most virulent abuse, let the public judge, who most deserves the character of an infamous defamer, he, who has deliberately published the most scandalous falsehoods that malice could invent, or the person who has been the innocent subject of them.

It appears that the publisher of the Mercury informed this illiberal author, that the person he aimed at, was not the writer of any of the pieces he alluded to; and if he had disbelieved the assurances of the Printer, yet he, to the certain knowledge of him who writes this, had been informed of it from another quarter.--

Convinced then, as he certainly was, that the person he so cruelly traduces, was not the writer of the chronicles, or of any one of the pieces which he charges him with writing, what but the heart of a Demon, or the malice of a Fiend, could instigate this ill-natur'd youth, in the face of conviction, to maliciously to attack one, whom he well knew was innocent. If a regard for truth, and a dread of bringing infamy on himself could not deter him, yet, had he not been lost to every sentiment that distinguishes the human from the infernal nature, he would have been restrained by a regard to the character of a person, who had never injured him or his, but who, on the contrary, has ever studied to serve the malicious ingrate.

So unprovoked an attack must furnish fresh cause of humiliation to mankind, by convincing them, that there is no stage of depravity to which the human mind is not capable of sinking. The dark assassin, who, under cover of the night, stabs the defenceless stranger, is a saint to him, who has thus knowingly and with an unparalleled cruelty, wrongfully attempted to ruin the character of one, who would gladly have embraced an opportunity to render him a benefit.
