NEW ORLEANS—Following a long time custom, the writer comes forth with a national grid round-up generally released the week prior to Thanksgiving, after which the standing of the Nation's football powers is followed weekly the rest of the dwindling campaign. Figures in this particular round-up include only games played through Saturday, Nov. 16.
Through that period, Morgan State of Baltimore, Md., was the country's lone major unbeaten and untied team, having turned back Delaware State, 22-6; West Virginia State, 13-12; Grambling of Louisiana, 35-0; Lincoln (Pa.), 28-0; A. and T., 12-7; Bluefield, 15-6, and Hampton, 20-0.
PENNSYLVANIANS, TOP POINT-MAKERS
The offensive leader, through Nov. 16 games, is Lincoln (Pa.) with 219 points scored in seven games for an average of 31.29 points per contest. The other offensive leaders are Wiley 29.17; Bethune-Cookman 28.33; Tuskegee 27.78; N. C. State 27.13; Southern 27.03; West Virginia 24.50; Benedict 24.28; Wilberforce 24.11; Texas 22.72; Morgan 20.71; Florida 20.43, and Tennessee State, 19.43.
This is the complete list of teams averaging more than three touchdowns a game.
The defensive leader is Lane of Jackson, Tenn., which, through Nov. 16, had yielded only 15 points in five games for an average of 2.15 allowed per contest.
The pursuers are N. C. State 3.74; Lincoln (Mo.) 4.12; Morgan 4.43; Prairie View 4.57; Tuskegee 5.00; Allen 5.28; Florida 6.84; Ky. State 7.25; Tenn. State 7.71; and Southern 7.88. These are the teams which allowed an average of a touchdown and extra point a game or less.
TUSKEGEE HAS WON MOST GAMES
Next behind Morgan with her 1000 percentage are Tuskegee 8 wins, 1 loss, no ties, for .889; N. C. State (7-1-0) for .875; Tennessee State (6-1-0), for .867; Lane, Va. State, and Bethune-Cookman, (5-1-0), for .833; Lincoln (Mo.) and Fisk (4-1-0) for .800; Prairie View (4-1-2), for .800; Wilberforce West Virginia (6-2-0), for .750; Xavier (3-1-0) for .750; Lincoln (Pa.), Florida, Benedict and Arkansas State (5-2-0) for .714; Southern (5-2-1), for .714; Wiley (4-2-0), for .667; Ky. State and Howard (5-3-0), for .625; Dillard (3-2-0), for .600; Shaw (4-3-1), for .571; Texas (5-4-0), for .556, S. C. State (3-3-1) and Knoxville (2-2-4), for .500.
The Dickinson Rating System, generally conceded by the coaches of the country as the fairest way to compute the national ratings among many strong teams which do not all face one another, gives Tennessee State one unit point higher than Morgan, 27.00 to 26.00, through Nov. 16 games—the Tennesseans having faced a somewhat stronger schedule of opponents from all four major conferences—but the Bears, should they topple Va. State Turkey Day, will overcome that slight margin in touchdown game against Henry Arthur Kean's men. The standing of the teams by the Dickinson Rating System, which awards 30 points to a first division or second division team that beats a first division team but only 20 points for such victories over a second division team—and which otherwise rewards teams playing stronger schedules—and penalizes those taking on weaker schedules—is as follows:
(SYMBOLS: W, won: L, lost: T, tied: PCT., percentage: D. R. S., Dickinson Rating System average; F. D. O., First Division Opponents met.)
--Teams have same DRS average but Ky. State upset Florida, 13-6;
Teams have same DRS average but Wiley beat Prairie View, 19-9;
***Teams have same DRS average but West Virginia eked Virginia State, 19-14: ****.
-Teams have same DRS average but Allen nosed out Bethune-Cookman, 7-6.--(The Dickinson Rating System provides that when two teams have the same average the team which won when they played shall outrank its opponent.)
