On Tuesday, February 14th, the writer of this had a very enjoyable time at the residence of Mrs. Sarah Grice, where a select party of ladies and gentlemen by invitation were assembled. The kind hostess, together with her charming daughter, Miss Annie, (who by the way was a pupil of the writer of this some six years ago), and her son Charles and his estimable lady, did all in their power to make the occasion one of real enjoyment, and so well did they succeed that all, and especially the old teacher, will have cause to remember it as a bright oasis in the journey of life, at which friends, parent, children and teacher passed, and drank from the fountain of enjoyment and pleasure. At an early hour sweet music was heard echoing and re-echoing through the hospitable building, and merry couples were soon engaged in the joyous and with the exception of a short time for refreshments was kept up until twelve o'clock, when the company dispersed, each going to their respective home with kind wishes for those who had furnished them with so much enjoyment; the writer of this tripped the light fantastic like a boy of sixteen, and often gave you, Mr. Editor, a passing thought.
On February 22d, the first term of Pine Grove School, in Sub. District No. 2, in Clendinen, came to a close and was celebrated by parents, scholars and teacher, by having an old fashioned molasses stew (or taffy pulling) which was enjoyed by all, especially the little ones, who could not be affectionately called honey upon that occasion, for they were lasscs and taffy all over.
The writer of this, after the celebration, started off on a visiting tour and called upon several teachers and visited several schools. He tried to pass himself off as County Superintendent, but was informed that he was too well known and that they did not propose taking any substitute for the Original. "A word to the wise should be sufficient."
A call at Mr. William Blaine's school was pleasant to your correspondent, because he and his pupils were once pupils of the writer of this. It was noon when I was there, and teacher and scholars gave the old preceptor a hearty welcome, and said they would show their appreciation by weighing the school on a pair of scales near the school house, provided the teacher, who had a "better half" did not weigh with them, as they wanted their weight to show their sympathy for their old bachelor teacher. The weight was twenty five hundred.
"As long as the lamp holds out to burn,
The vilest sinner may return."
