Charles Young, hero of a long struggle to advance the status of the Negro in the Army, Richard B. Harrison, who brought the Negro from the theatrical gutter of Minstrelsy to the more dignified role of real acting, stalked across the stage at Norway Hall Monday evening in the questionable pursuit of votes for a lot of Hennepin County Candidates.
Seven persons called us Tuesday morning, two came in to voice their protests to paying admission to see a lot of politicos, but being in a rather broad mood, we shooed them off remembering that when anyone gets politics in their blood, dead heroes, outstanding non-political figures, patriotism or anything else don't count much, just so they get out the crowd.
The thing that interested us quite a bit was not the fact that the first thing we received on arrival was a card from a gentleman who aspired to a judgeship, or the fact that had to duck under the arm of a young man who was passing out campaign literature. It was the finesse with which a lot of political aspirants were shoved down the throats (on a drumstick) of a lot of people who had no interest in politics or politicians.
Of course the office seekers were well pleased, they had their day in court, whoever put it over must have been pleased, for he showed the gentlemen just who is leading the Minneapolis Negro around by the nose, a fact that caused us to leave as early as possible.
We must say in all fairness though to the organization which sponsored the affair, that few know of the turn things were going to take. Sometime ago they passed, and broadcast the passage of the measure to the effect that they could not take any part in political activities. So to the ones who have complained that they were slipped a fast one we say, "Think about the poor guy who helped build the thing up," "he is the one who has a holler coming."
My hat is off though to the gentleman that put the political thing over, he went Barnum one better, Barnum waited for them to be born, this fellow didn't wait a minute, he made them five hundred at a crack.
P. S. The only colored candidate Minneapolis has had in years was not in evidence, but figure that one out yourself.
