From the Detroit Advertiser
Save! Oh! Save the Union!
Men of the mighty, dauntless North!
Whose granite peaks colossal stand
O'er Ocean's billows looming forth,
The rock-bound bulwarks of our land!
Sons of the Patriot Pilgrim sires!
Heirs of time-hallowed-Faneuil Hall!
Whose altars first flashed Freedom's fires,
And echoed back her trumpet call.
When Lexington and Concord's plain
Ran red, where high-souled heroes stood:
And Bunker's brow, heaped with the slain,
Was baptized with bold Boston blood!
By all your battle-scars of fame,
By all the struggles it has cost!
By your unsullied, honored name!
Let not your country now be lost!
Save! Oh! Save the Union!
Men of the valiant wave-washed East!
Whose countless keels on every sea,
Proclaim thy power and pride--Oh! seest
Thou not the breakers on our lee?
The Ship of Union's driving fast
On a wild shore--while o'er her deck
Break the mad waves--her quivering masts
And fluttering sails, betoken wreck!
Man every yard! stand by the helm;
A nation; nay, the world commands,
Let not the howling storm o'erwhelm
And dash her, shivering, on the sands!
By all your history so proud!
By all your glory and renown!
By the black tempest in yon cloud!
Let not that gallant ship go down!
Save! oh! Save the Union!
Men of the generous, noble South!
My own, my loved, my native home!
Curse not with blasphemous, foul mouth
Thy country, though fanatics foam!
Forget not, thy ancestors bled
When rung war's knightly clarion
Wake not the sleep of thy great dead!
Wise Jefferson, brave Marion!
Forgive, though wronged, 'tis nobler far,
Than be a fratricide, or see
Th' eclipse of one bright-burning star
That gems the flag of Liberty!
By all the splendors of thy past!
By all thy fear of future shame!
By the dark shadows o'er us cast!
By Washington's all glorious name!
Save! oh! Save the Union!
Men of the giant, free-born West!
Land of dim woods and rolling lakes-
Descendants from one mother's breast;
For her, yourselves, your children's sakes,
Say! shall the golden link be broke,
That binds you in a holy chain
To the old roof, where first you spoke
My Father? Shall you ne'er again
See that bless'd spot, to memory dear
Save as a foreign, severed State?
While in your sad eye starts the tear,
And stranger's scowl with foemen's hate!
By all the joys of childhood's spring!
By all the hopes of manhood's prime!
By homes that to your heart-strings cling!
Swear! ne'er shall come that traitor time!
