Escape of Convicts.

Five penitentiary convicts made their escape yesterday evening. Four of them had been engaged at work on a section of the Tennessee and Pacific Railroad, about six miles from town. Near nightfall, as they were preparing to return to the city, they overcame the good Mr. Frank George, who they knocked down. They then disarmed him and fired at another guard whom attempted to effect their capture.

They then precipitately fled and made their escape. The other had been at work on the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad. On returning to the city, he leaped from the train while in motion.

They were all negroes and none of them had been recaptured up to 10 o'clock last night.
