TRUMAN SMITH AGAIN AT WORK.
The administration party having become alarmed for their safety in the next Congress, have pressed Truman Smith again in the service. They see the re-action which the disgraceful conduct of Gen. Taylor and his directory have already produced in almost every part of the country. This, they are determined to counteract if possible, not by retracing their steps, and honestly avowing their purposes in regard to the measures which they mean to propose, but by appeals to the sympathies of the people in behalf of Gen. Taylor, and asking now that "he may only have a fair trial." Circulars have been prepared by this man Smith, and sent to the different States in the Union which have yet to vote, urging the party to take active measures in the coming contest, and bring out their full strength for the Whig nominees. They doubtless find that it is necessary for them to resort to the same means they did last year, and Smith has been again selected to do the work. But it is hoped for the sake of honesty, for the sake of Southern rights, that his influence in this Union is forever lost. He, it will be recollected, was the chief actor in the great drama of deception that was played off on the American people in 1848.
