Mystery surrounds the death of two children in the family of Mr. and Mrs. Burton Faunce, of Riverside, the babies both dying last week. Attending physicians state that poisoning of some kind is indicated, but no evidence can be found to substantiate that presumption.
Castor oil, which was administered to both babies, has been analyzed by a chemist and has been found to be pure, with no traces of poison.
Alberta, aged eight months, died on Tuesday of last week. She was given a teaspoonful of the oil and soon thereafter became violently ill. She had been suffering from a cold. Efforts of physicians to relieve the babe, after she took the oil, was unavailing.
Another baby, Margaret, aged 22 months, died on Thursday evening. She, too, had been suffering from a cold and was given a dose of castor oil from the same bottle. Soon thereafter she was taken violently ill and died from weakness caused by repeated evacuations.
County detectives and County Physician D. F. Remer made an investigation of the deaths. They consulted the attending physicians, Dr. R. I. Downs, of Riverside, and Dr. Harry L. Rogers, of Riverton, and questioned the parents. The supposition was that there had been contamination of the castor oil, but this theory was dismissed after the report from the chemist was received.
The parents of the children were prostrated by the calamity in their family. A double funeral took place Saturday.
