A public speaking contest was held last week for students of Springbrook High School.
Seventh and eighth grade participants recited poems and the ninth and tenth graders delivered speeches.
Winner in the seventh grade was Bob Davis, who read Vachel Lindsay's poem, "The Congo."
Greg Tevis, who gave "The Adventures of Isabell" by Ogden Nash, was winner in the eighth grade, with Nancy Fogelberg and Peter Dudeny runners-up.
The oration given by Dee Mandis won acclaim from the students and judges who awarded her first place. Dee gave Elias Lieberman's speech, "I am an American."
Runnerup was Ricky Kremen, giving President Wilson's last speech appealing for support of the League of Nations.
The finalists had been picked by the school's English teachers, who served as judges. Because of the popular support from the student body and faculty, the contest will be an annual affair at Springbrook.
