NEW RAIL ROUTE
IS RECOMMENDED
BY SEWARD C OF C

SEWARD, Alaska, May 3.-(AP)- Construction of a new rail route between Seward and Anchorage was recommended today by the Seward Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber made the recommendation in a telegram to Col. J. P. Johnson, General Manager of the Alaska Railroad, who was in Juneau Saturday conferring with Department of Interior officials on Territorial needs.

It said the route would provide rail service to Kenai and assure maintenance of Seward as a year-round port.

The Chamber also recommended Federal control of Alaskan freight and passenger transportation to prevent labor disputes leading to stoppage of transportation.

And it called for government financing of low cost housing.

It asked government construction of 150 suitable, cold-weather houses costing $6,000 to $10,000. These would be resold to home-owners on a contract basis over a 20 to 30-year period.

Interest rates would be low, under the proposal.

Final recommendations were for elimination of cost-plus government contracts and the lowering of legal interest rates.

Stressing the strategic and economic importance of maintaining Seward as a year-round port, the Chamber proposed a survey for a new railroad running northwesterly up the Resurrection River and crossing Turnagain Arm to Potter, Alaska. The Chamber said the route has a maximum elevation of 800 feet with the approach to the pass about 30 miles long, providing an easy grade. Weather conditions also are good with light snowfall.
