The Rebels Erecting Batteries at Galveston.

The Town Set on Fire by Shells.

No Movement to be Made at Present.

New York, March 18.

Advices, per steamer Union, state that the rebels have erected batteries at Galveston, mounted with guns taken from the Harriet Lane and Westfield.

The Federal fleet off Galveston Feb. 28th consisted of the steam frigate Brooklyn and four gunboats.

On the 12th the Brooklyn threw a few shells into the fort on Pelican Island, on the 24th she threw a few shells into the town, setting it on fire in three places, which, however, was soon put out.

The Harriet Lane is up the river.

It is not probable that the fleet, as at present constituted, will undertake anything against the city.
