LONDON, June 5.--Whitelaw Reid, the new United States ambassador to the Court of St. James, was formally received this morning by King Edward and will therefore be able to take part in the various state functions arranged for the entertainment of King Alfonso of Spain, who reached England today for a week's stay.
The king of Spain and his retinue were conveyed across the channel from Cherbourg on the royal yacht Victoria and Albert and escorted by a squadron of British warships. In anticipation of the arrival of the distinguished visitor the town and harbor of Portsmouth were astir early. Immense crowds assembled along the sea front, and rounds of cheers mingled with the national airs of England and Spain and salutes from the harbor ships and land batteries as the royal yacht entered the roads.
King Alfonso was met by King Edward and Queen Alexandra and warm greetings were exchanged. The royal party immediately took train for London and on arrival in the metropolis the young Spanish sovereign was greeted with another hearty ovation.
The round of elaborate entertainment arranged in honor of King Alfonso will begin tonight with a royal family dinner at Buckingham palace.
During the week there will be a succession of state functions following the general plan of the entertainment provided for M. Loubet on the occasion of his late visit to London.
