Some days since, the daily papers published the fact that James Clark, of Onondaga county, N. Y., had been fleeced in a gambling house in Broadway, between Bond and Great Jones streets, to the amount of $850. The proprietor of the place was arrested, and, of course, gave bail for his appearance before the Court of General Sessions, and probably is at the present time engaged in the same nefarious business. In Mr. Clark's affidavit before the Court with regard to his loss, he stated that he had been directed to the gambling house by a policeman on Broadway in that vicinity. As the Fifteenth Precinct takes in both sides of Broadway at that point, Capt. Caffrey felt considerably annoyed that any of his men should be implicated in such a matter, and he brought the matter to the notice of the Police Commissioners; and the officers who were on duty in that locality at the time mentioned, were ordered to appear before the Board and explain the matter. They all swore in the most positive manner that they had never directed any person to such a house. The Board as well as the captain, while eager that the members of the force should impart all useful knowledge to persons asking for it, are by no means anxious that information of the above character should be communicated. We opine that Mr. Clark must have made a slight mistake in this instance.
