CAN WE END "POWER POLITICS"
The idea is constantly expressed that the United States should take a firm hand to prevent the development of "power politics" in Europe.
This is a simple suggestion, obviously of no practical value. The "firm hand" that the United States is urged to take will have no influence whatever unless it is backed by "power politics" from this side of the Atlantic.
Along the same line, we hear much talk about the fact that the smaller nations of Europe are looking to the United States to protect their territorial "integrity after the war is over.
This is a violent assumption if it includes any idea that the United States will use force against Russia or Great Britain in behalf of the smaller nations of Europe.
In connection with these discussions, it is important that the people of the United States understand the inability of this country to dictate the settlement.
No one nation of the United Nations will be entirely satisfied with attempts to solve the vexing problems of Europe. Moreover, no one nation of the Allied group should be foolish enough to expect a veto power upon every decision to be made.
A newspaper can get ahead of its home town, but few home towns can get ahead of their newspapers.
