Thursday night last, a Raccoon entered the house occupied by Messrs. Jordan and Houghton:--Mr. Jordan slept with a grand-daughter, six years old in the lower room-About mid. night, the mother and several others in the chamber over head, were awakened by a noise in the garret. Much terrified with the apprehension of its being a mad dog, called to Mr. Jordan, who immediately arose, and going up the stairs, the raccoon passed him, and entered the lower room leaped upon the bed and seized the child. stuck his claws into her right shoulder and griped it so as to leave a spot black and blue, about three inches in diameter-he wounded her in several places upon her neck, hands arms, elbows, bit her right ear, made a ragged wound from the ear to top of her head, and laid her skull bare five inches in length.-All this was done in little more than a minute, while they were lighting a candle. The child screaming in a terrific manner, Mr. Houghton ran in found the animal upon the bed, and killed him. He weighed sixteen pounds and three quarters.-
The Raccoon had been kept in possession of some person, and had a small leather trap buckle round his neck. Whence he came, and to whom he belonged are not yet discovered.--
The child at present is very ill with her wounds, but is hoped will recover. Ought not this to serve as a caution against attempting to tame such mischievous and useless animals ?
