ELIZABETH-TOWN, Sept. 19.

Yesterday afternoon, at four o'clock, the office of collector of the excise, for Essex county, was offered at public vendue, at the court house in New-ark, when, in a very crowded assembly, no person offered to bid for the same, although the sheriff (whose character requires no commendation) gave, by frequent adjournment, every opportunity even to speculators for their voice : but the measure being found more calculated for the meridian of despotic than free governments, met with a silent and universal disdain.
