Mr. Willis writes to the Home Journal from Washington:
The French (to make a remark that has been well considered) soldier well together. They are born to soldier and cook, as Yankees are born to carpenter and bargain; but they (the French) require each other's society more than other nations do. They like to encamp together, and cook together, and all the rest of it together. And why would it not be well, therefore, to segregate, and collect into one brigade, all the Frenchmen in our service? There are hundreds scattered, at present, through the various divisions of our army, while there is a deficiency of actual numbers in this Fifty-fifth Regiment, besides a sprinkling of some few inharmonious Irish and Germans. It was suggested, in my hearing, that it would be well worth the while of “the authorities” to issue some general order, which would facilitate this crystallization natural around a nucleus—the combining of all the French, among our scattered volunteers, into one effective body. Think how gallantly the young Princes of France would go into action, with such a brigade of their own proper subjects behind them!
