COUNTING CHICKENS.

Election Returns Already Prepared.

New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania Considered Doubtful.

New York, Nov. 3.—Election prognostications continue obscure and conflicting. The best opinion is that the Republicans will preserve their control of the New York State Senate but lose the State ticket, with the possible chance of saving their Secretary of State and Attorney-General, because of the defection of Tilden's friends and the anti-Tammany faction. On the other hand there is among Republicans much fear of baneful influence of the feeling voiced in the Evening Post's suggestion that New York and New Jersey Republicans who vote for the State tickets of their party, must do so with the knowledge that if these tickets are successful, the Republican enemies of the administration will accept the result as a triumph for Conkling and Robeson, rather than of the higher principles for which President Hayes is contending. In the local contest here between the Tammany Democrats and the allied Republican and anti-Tammany forces, the regulars seem likely to achieve the larger success, as there is no general hearty co-operation by the Republican masses in favor of the coalition. In Brooklyn there are great hopes that the coalition between the Independents and Republicans will overthrow the long dominant ring and elect John F. Henry, the well-known druggist. Gen. McClellan and his friends in New Jersey are somewhat less confident of his election than they were, although they think the Workingmen's opposition is greater in noise than in numbers. In Pennsylvania the Republicans will lose the state probably, and in any event will have a greatly reduced majority, unless the Independent-Greenback Labor party movement shall be as formidable as its leaders profess to believe and derive its support chiefly from the Democracy. This faction's platform calls for interconvertible bonds and favors the protection of internal improvement and subsidies to steamships. Blanton Duncan, who has been stumping in that interest, claims that their vote will astound the politicians. He estimates that it will be 15,000 each in Alleghany and Luzerne counties, and 30,000 in Philadelphia, but he is not a very reliable political prophet.
