The intelligence conveyed to England by the Lightning steamer, and received here by the Portuguese mail, is confirmed, with the additional news that 2000 Spanish troops had crossed the frontiers on the other side, many had also entered to join Don Miguel.
A lamentable occurrence took place on the 8th ult. A Prussian prison vessel, at anchor in the Tagus, took fire, supposed accidentally, and before assistance reached them, from thirty to forty Miguelite prisoners unfortunately lost their lives. The ships in the harbor gave the aid their fire-engines as soon as they could be brought into service.
Napier was at Oporto on the 10th, occupied in the training of land forces to be ready for the occasion. Said Don Pedro from north and east of Oporto—they being on one side & the Miguelites Amarante bridge on the other. The Constitutionalists are in possession of most Oporto—they being on one side & the Miguelites on the other.
It was intended to unite a large force under having concentrated all his troops, and having Sa the Alemtejo but Bourmont tarem, repulsed de Sa in his attack on Moura considerable reinforcements and obliged him to fall back upon Mertola; however, as he will be joined in a few days by troops which have been sent round from hence for the Guadiana, and as General Pina is to advance from Alcacer do Sal, of which he obtained possession without firing a shot. I have no doubt Bourmont will soon meet his match; in this case the Alemtejo will likewise be free. The decree of forfeiture against Miguel created a great sensation in Santarem, and will probably cause the ranks of the Usurper to be thinned as soon as it is ascertained that any refugees received Don Pedro reported that the Duke de Cadaval and one of his daughters have died at Elvas, and the Marqueza de Bellas at Santarem. The Lisbon papers of April 14th, bring an account of the Miguelites having dispatched from Santarem a large force, which made an attack upon St. Ubes on the 12th, but was repulsed with considerable loss. The attack served to elicit the zeal of the troops in Lisbon many of whom, particularly the foreigners who were lately in disgrace, volunteered to go to St. Ubes, to assist in repelling it. Their services were not accepted. The Lisbon Chronicle of March 25th contains the official communication of the Secretary of State and of the Decree of Don Pedro making Lisbon and Oporto free ports, as noticed in the Commercial Advertiser of Monday. As they may be of peculiar importance to our merchants, we may give them entire hereafter.
