Original Poetry.
Reflections on the fallen, and degraded
state of our Country.
O human nature! when thy state I view,
With grief thy fall I see, lament it too!
O sacred virtue: whither last thou fled?
Say, that our country may implore thy aid!
Spirit of goodness! wilt thou hide thy face,
And leave our land to sink in foul disgrace
Art thou driven by faction's horrid crimes,
To seek a refuge in more virtuous climes;
Is patriotism banish'd from our land?
Or paralyz'd by faction's blasting hand?
Or in a small minority confin'd,
Whom tyrants to oblivion would consign.
Is this the awful brink, on which we stand?
It surely is—our ruin is at hand.
O rouse, my country's honor, from your
sleep,
View the black gulf, that yawns beneath
your feet,
Remove the fatal blindness from your eyes,
Untwine that "gordian knot," those cursed
ties,
which bind our rulers to be servile tools
To a base Tyrant, who the world would
rule.
O, sainted Washington! rise from the grave,
Lift up thy voice, thy sinking country save;
For boist'rous waves our ship of state does
toss,
And soon our independence will be lost.
Almighty God! our suffering country shield.
Save from the horrors of the sanguine field,
Save from destruction our lov'd country's
rights,
Nor let us sink into oblivious night.
Or have our sins ascended up to heav'n,
And rulers to us for a scourge be giv'n?
Withhold thy plagues from this once happy
land,
Bid the destroying angel stay his hand.
