NEWCASTLE, Oct. 19.

Tuesday evening, on the arrival of the post at South Shields, and the defeat of the rebels at Long Island was made public, an incredible number of people assembled in the market place, when the bells were set a ringing, bonfires were made, and every demonstration of loyalty and joy displayed on the occasion.

About 6 o'clock most of the principal Gentlemen, friends to Government, met at Mr. Fearon's, to celebrate the event; where a number of loyal toasts were drank, and the evening spent with the utmost cheerfulness and decorum.
