ASHLAND, Wis., March 1. (UP)
—Tear gas brought a Polish couple out of their northern Wisconsin farm home to learn that the United States is at war, that food and other articles are rationed, and that they must pay taxes.
It was the first time Mr. and Mrs. Alex Sabalewski had left their farm in five years.
Deputy sheriffs fired tear gas into their home after the Sabalewskis refused a final request that they come to town peacefully and pay their delinquent taxes.
The couple contended they were not required to pay taxes because they did not use the roads, schools, and other facilities maintained by the county.
At the Ashland jail, the Sabalewskis, who came here from Chicago several years ago, said they had lost track of the time and had no idea of their ages.
